SACRED HAVEN COVEN

Ostara Flowers and Herbs

My Ostara Herb Garden

From the dark Earth the young shoots push upwards and the seeds that have laid dormant throughout the long winter months now germinate and sprout. As each day lengthens and the Sun's warmth grows stronger my herb garden begins another cycle of growth.
Each year I watch the rebirth of the Crocus, English Cowslip, and Violets. These are some of my most prized plants, passed to me from my Grandmother. I tend them carefully for they have survived longer than the fifty years that have know them; yet there is a feeling of youthfulness in these plants. Their yellow and purple flowers are the first splashes of colour in my garden.

CROCUS/SAFFRON -Promotes clairvoyance and psychism. Also attracts prosperity and good fortune through spiritual openness.

ENGLISH COWSLIP - Often associated with the Goddess Freya.  protection, also added to love sachets.

VIOLET -Promotes peace, tranquility, happiness. Calms the nerves, draws prophetic dreams and visions. Stimulates creativity.

GORSE; along side it's cousin the SCOTCH BROOM, are considered invasive weeds; but they are welcomed by the honey bees for they provide the seasons first abundant supply of food.

Ostara is the time of budding trees and new growth; a rebirth for the bulbs like DAFFODILS and HYACINTH.  The DANDELIONS  make their first appearance. An old neighbour passed on a PUSSY WILLOW it’s buds also herald in Ostara.

Other herbs to gather this time of year include;

PRIMROSE -Promotes the disclosure of secrets, resolution of mysteries, revelation of truth. Breaks down dishonesty and secrecy.

BIRCH -Druids tap the sap for a wine. Spiritual and psychic opening, connecting with spirit helpers. Promotes balance, harmony, connection to others.
